Our research has indicated that the popularity of e-zines (Electronic Online Magazines) are loosing out to the blog style magazine because of the potential interactive relationship allowing readers to post comments and also sometimes photographs, readers letters and perhaps even articles. From our experience feedback expressed by our readers of the first 2 issues of the 1940s Radio Magazine, we have learnt that the majority of our readers like our online format but some indicated they would like to be able to download a copy of the magazine to read offline and others wanted to be able print off a copy. Whilst researching, both Lynda and I spent some time on various 1940s and re-enactor forums and social networking sites. We have read many interesting discussions on the pros and cons regarding traditional magazines versus the electronic type of magazine found online. The pros are that online magazines are cheaper to produce because the final decision of whether to print out the magazine is left to the personal choice of the reader hence publishing costs are avoided by the producer enabling them to potentially continue providing viable content that can be funded purely by precisely targeted advertising. The downside, as expressed by the views of many when discussing the sad downfall of the WW2 Re-enactors magazine, was that online magazines do not give the experience of the physical feeling of having a traditional quality publication with photos and good quality content produced in the printed format. Also many expressed that they feared that electronic magazines could not be read in the traditional places such as on the trains, planes and whilst sat on the toilet! My own thoughts on this are based on my everyday experience of observing the everyday use of mobile phones being used to browse the internet for the latest news and to scan product barcodes in supermarkets to find the best prices before buying. The truth is where ever you go people are using mobile devices to access current information without the need to purchase a physical publication and in most cases also not having to directly pay the provider to access the information.
